SMART program needs readers

SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) is in need of volunteers to spend one hour a week during the school year reading one-on-one with pre-K through third-grade children.

Volunteers are especially needed at Ardenwald, Lewelling, Milwaukie, Oak Grove, Jennings Lodge and Sunnyside elementary schools.

SMART is an early literacy nonprofit that envisions an Oregon in which every child can read and is empowered to succeed. The organization engages community volunteers to help children become confident readers by providing one-on-one literacy support, adult mentorship and books to take home and keep.

Volunteers read one hour per week from mid-October through mid-May.

Applications are accepted year-round.
